WHAT I'VE LEARNT ABOUT... BECOMING AN ADULT. KAT POOLE, EDITOR AT EMERALD STREET.

This week for "What I've learnt about...", I chatted to Kat Poole, Editor of Emerald Street about her brilliant new book "Being an Adult: the ultimate guide to moving out, getting a job, and getting your act together".

Kat shares how she's found that life plans don't always work out as you imagine and why it's okay to not know exactly what you're doing next...

"At the beginning of my twenties, I thought I had my life mapped out — but I’d created a plan for myself that had nothing to do with what made me happy, and everything to do with what I thought I ought to be doing.

It took years for me to realise that I would only find my own version of fulfilment when I stopped putting that kind of pressure on myself and caring what other people would think. I can’t believe the tears I wasted worrying that I was making the wrong decisions.

I’ve discovered the joy in taking risks, trying things, proving myself wrong. My adult life has become an imperfect patchwork, but one that makes me really proud. In it, there are jobs I fought for and had to leave; relationships and friendships I expected would last but didn't; unhappy times that made me rethink the things that brought me joy.

And hopefully, by co-authoring Being an Adult, my experiences of finding growing up to be a puzzle (long before it became a pleasure) will help other people whose lives aren’t going in the direction they imagined.

So perhaps the most important thing I’ve learnt is that it’s not the end of the world if you don’t know what’s coming next. I’m constantly surprised at the paths my life has taken me down. And honestly, I couldn’t be happier that the plans I had in my twenties aren’t the ones I’m living in my thirties."
