This week’s BORN AT DAWN FOCUS is on Samantha Silver and Gemma Rose Breger who together make up THIS IS MOTHERSHIP. Gemma is a Fashion and Celebrity Stylist and Sam is Beauty Director at Stylist Magazine.
Following having children, they set up THIS IS MOTHERSHIP together to help busy Mums navigate beauty, fashion, baby and life. We heard them talk at Shoreditch House a couple of months ago and they have an amazing working relationship and dynamic.
We wanted to find out more so we asked them a few questions about their life...
Why did you decide to set up THIS IS MOTHERSHIP?
We both felt there was a huge gap in the market for mums who wanted to keep their 'cool.' We've both been working in the fashion and beauty industry for 10 years so we wanted to use our expert knowledge to show mums how easy and quick it is to make yourself look and feel great.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Gemma: Pale, stubborn and decisive.
Sam: Fake tanned, messy and knackered.
What makes you happy?
Our kids napping for more than an hour at lunch!
Who and what inspires you?
We both get great inspiration from our mums. By coincidence, they were both beauty therapists before they had us, so they know all the tricks of the trade when it comes to beauty questions. They both would drop everything in a second if we needed them and always come to the rescue when we need help, advice or just to vent.
You seem like you're very busy, how do you cope and manage to juggle it all?
We used to think we were busy and tired before we had kids!! How ridiculous!
It's been great running the website with a sidekick as one of us can always take over when the other one has too much going on. At the beginning we were all over the place but we now have a better balance and have worked out how to juggle our real jobs, our blog jobs and our mum jobs.
What’s been your biggest lesson?
Gemma's favourite phrase is 'This Too Shall Pass.' My grandma used to always say it. No matter if it's something briliant happening in your life, or something dreadful, the moment will pass so appreciate it all.
What’s been your best piece of advice?
Gemma: My mum taught me to always do the right thing and I take that advice with me wherever I go. It helps me to make better decisions in life.
Sam: Calm is a super power. Gemma taught me this and I now try to apply it to my daily life.
